An exhibition designed by Pocklington and District Heritage Trust and hosted by Pocklington Arts Centre displayed maps spanning six hundred years of Pocklington occupation.
Yorkshire post ran a feature on 19th March which detailed one map in particular: the since-declassified plans for the Home Front in Bishop Wilton. The document details who would play what role, should an attack on the local area take place. You can read more about it in the Yorkshire Post article, which is linked below. The Yorkshire Post sold out in Pocklington in response to the article, demonstrating Pocklington residents’ eagerness to learn about their local history.
Also displayed at the exhibition were maps from the 1300s, and of particular intrigue was a map showing Pocklington church prior to the addition of a steeple.
Over 300 people signed the visitor book and left comments celebrating the exhibition. One visitor shared that they were “born in Pocklington” and that it was “lovely to go back in time.” A young visitor shared their elation at having found a subject for their school project, an especially uplifting comment to recieve as inspiring young people to take an interest in their own local heritage is something that is important to many of our trustees.
The exhibition was a success and the impact it had on the local community was tangible. It is our hope that visitors have been inspired to learn more about the local area.
