‘Little Kingdoms of Yorkshire: Post-Roman Pocklington & Beyond’

Renowned Anglo-Saxon and Viking era author, Alex Harvey, is giving a talk entitled ‘Little Kingdoms of Yorkshire: Post-Roman Pocklington & Beyond’ at Burnby Hall on Friday 30 October at 7.30pm.

An engaging history speaker, Harvey’s Pocklington talk will feature his latest popular publication ‘Little Kingdoms: An A-Z of Early Medieval Britain’. – a detailed analysis of the dozens of territories, tribes or kingdoms that existed across Britain between the Roman period and the Late Viking age. Before England, Wales, and Scotland were created, before Alfred the Great and the Great Viking Army, the kingdoms that made up Britain were a squabbling mosaic of territories.

These places, remembered now in place-names, artefacts, and obscure chronicles, have become obscured, forgotten and in many cases lost entirely. Harvey’s ‘Little Kingdoms’ peels back the veil on 62 unique realms, showcasing the most diverse corners of Early Medieval England.York-based Harvey is an archaeology graduate and Pocklington Heritage Trust trustee who has previously spoken locally about his Viking-age publications.

His Anglo-Saxon talk is a prelude to a series of East Yorkshire events in the lead up to the 1400th anniversary celebrations in 2027 of King Edwin’s 627AD conversion to Christianity.
